Broadband terminology can be confusing
We're here to simplify common words and phrases for you.
Glossary
Bandwidth
Think of bandwidth as the motorway of your internet. It's the maximum amount of data your connection can handle at once. Wider motorways (higher bandwidth) allow more traffic (data) to flow smoothly.
Download Speed
This is how quickly data travels from the internet to your device. Higher download speeds mean you can stream films, download games, and browse faster without buffering.
Upload Speed
This measures how quickly your device can send data out to the internet. Fast upload speeds are great for video calls, online gaming, or uploading photos and videos.
Ethernet Connection or Lan Connection
A cable-based connection directly linking your device to your broadband. Think of it as plugging straight into the internet for the fastest and most reliable connection.
Latency
Simply put, latency is the delay between sending a request and getting a response online. Lower latency means smoother gaming, quicker browsing, and less buffering when streaming.
Router
This is the heart of your home's internet, connecting all your devices to the broadband network. Think of it as the traffic controller directing data where it needs to go.
Mesh System
This clever tech boosts your WiFi by using multiple devices to spread a strong internet signal throughout your home. Perfect if you struggle with WiFi black spots or weak signals upstairs!
